Modern build utilizes traditional masonry

Newcastle University recently undertook a £13m project involving the construction of 347 new bed spaces in Park and Kensington Terraces in the city. The existing buildings on Park Terrace were demolished to make way for two new buildings and a new build mews block will be introduced to the rear of the Terraces.

The Intelligent Steel engineered off-site steel frame system was used for the 3 new three and five floor blocks with the external finish of the buildings largely traditional masonry and slate similar to the buildings which they are replacing.

Key benefits of building with steel frames manufactured by Howick machinery and designed in Tekla Structures included:

  • Intelligent Steel designed bespoke, lightweight, easily-handled panels delivered just in time to an efficient installation program
  • A clean, waste free factory assembled system reducing the construction program
  • Minimal disruption on site and negligible site storage requirement
